Attention Principals and Directors!  We can work with you to custom design a unique, age appropriate, enrichment curriculum introducing the basic concepts of Architecture and design for your students at your location.   As a contracted vendor with the NYC Department of Education, all of our instructors are registered to work with students in their classrooms.  Sessions are normally broken down into 10 week blocks (1 session per week) of a math/science enrichment model, an art/history enrichment model, or a combination of the two.

Sample Lesson Plan

From our 4th Grade curriculum.

  • Introduction to Architecture.  Definitions of building, Architect, design. How do we identify a building’s clues ie: what the function of the building is.
  • Slideshow of Different Buildings.  Can you tell the function?  Buildings are made of many things, but they are all made out of simple shapes. Students will then identify them.
  • Introduction/Overview of Ancient Architecture.  Using what we’ve learned so far to understand the simple concepts of structure, support, and foundation to analyze the wonders of the Ancient world.
  • Ancient Egypt.  The lessons of the Great Pyramids of Giza. Building materials and process.  The importance of a strong foundation.  Students will view video segments of computer generated models of Ancient Egypt.
  • Ancient Greece.  The lessons of the Parthenon.  Building materials and process.  The strength of columns.  Identifying the 3 major classes of Greek columns.  Compare/contrast the concept of columns to modern post/beam construction.  Students will view video segments of computer generated models of Ancient Greece.
  • Ancient Rome.  The lessons of the Colosseum and Aqueducts.  The development of the arch from the column.  Other important developments made by Ancient Romans ie: paved road systems, plumbing/sewage systems for their cities.  Students will view video segments of computer generated models of Ancient Rome.
  • Being an Ancient Architect.  After a slide show of other famous Ancient structures, students will be able to identify the clues/function of the structure.  Students will then get the chance to work on a blank Architots® blueprint formatted sheet with architectural scales/stencils and pencils to design and draw an elevation of a building that incorporates as many ancient design themes as they can.
  • Introduction/History of Homes.  How homes have adapted and developed over history and how natural resources and climate affect how and why homes are built certain ways.  Students will view a slide show from cave people, to frontier log cabins, to modern day homes.
  • Modern Building Materials.  How Architects use the natural materials surrounding them to design and construct.  We can only use what we have around us. Students will participate in a discussion on what buildings are made of and view a slide show of the main building materials used today.
